About Thames & Hudson
Thames & Hudson is an independent, family-owned illustrated book publisher based in London. We publish books of exceptional quality for a global audience across art, design, architecture, photography, fashion, history, archaeology and popular culture.
Our values — creativity, integrity, respect, communication and excellence — guide how we work as well as what we publish.
About the role
We are looking for a commercially minded, fluent German-speaking sales professional to grow Thames & Hudson’s business across Germany, Austria and Switzerland. This is an influential role within our International Sales team, developing sales of our illustrated books, Gift Lab and distributed publishers’ lists through strong relationships with wholesalers, trade retailers, museums, galleries and specialist partners. You will bring strategic account management, excellent market knowledge and a thoughtful, entrepreneurial approach to developing new routes to market. The role is London-based and involves regular travel across the territory.
What you’ll be doing
- Lead and deliver sales plans across Germany, Austria and Switzerland, supporting agreed annual objectives
- Develop high-quality, long-term relationships with wholesalers, trade customers, chains and specialist retailers
- Grow sales of Thames & Hudson’s frontlist and backlist, Gift Lab and distributed publishers’ lists
- Develop priority art, museum and gallery customers, including Walther Koenig and comparable partners
- Identify and develop new opportunities in specialist and non-traditional channels
- Present titles to customers, plan catalogue inclusion and work with Marketing on effective sales materials and activity
- Manage the company’s presence at relevant catalogues, sales conferences and trade fairs, ensuring purposeful follow-up
- Analyse sales performance, report market trends and share practical recommendations with colleagues
- Support wider International Sales and publishing strategy projects, particularly around Gift and routes to market
- Maintain awareness of relevant EU regulatory and sustainability requirements for books and gift products
What you’ll bring
- Fluent German, with the ability to communicate confidently and professionally with customers and partners
- Experience managing key accounts in German-speaking markets, ideally including wholesalers or specialist bookselling customers
- A strong track record of developing sales and building trusted, productive customer relationships
- Experience selling illustrated books, or comparable visual, cultural or premium products
- Excellent analytical, strategic-planning, negotiation and presentation skills
- Confidence using Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and PowerPoint
- The ability to manage competing priorities independently, with good judgement and reliable follow-through
- Commercial curiosity, an entrepreneurial mindset and an interest in illustrated publishing and the visual arts
- A willingness to explore digital tools, including AI, to improve efficiency and ways of working
- A commitment to contributing to an inclusive workplace that values different backgrounds and perspectives
It would also be useful if you have experience with customers such as Libri, OLF or Walther Koenig; art or specialist illustrated books; and trade fairs, catalogues or sales conferences in German-speaking markets.
How our values show up
You will use creative and commercially aware thinking to develop opportunities; act with integrity in customer commitments, reporting and regulatory awareness; build respectful relationships across different markets and teams; communicate plans and insight clearly; and maintain high standards in territory planning, customer service and follow-up.
